The little fort with the best free view in old Muscat.
The 16th-century Portuguese fort on the rock above Mutrah harbour. Climb up for the view every postcard of Oman is trying to be, then spend the evening below it: corniche, fish market, souq. This is 'things to do in Matrah' in one entry.

How to get to Matrah Fort & the corniche
- It's the fort you can already see from anywhere on Mutrah corniche.
- Pay for parking along the corniche or by the souq and walk, the steps start at the base of the rock.
What you'll do
- Climb the steps to the towers, the harbour, the mountains and the old town spread out below.
- Time it for golden hour, the whole bay lights up.
- Come down and do Matrah properly: fish market at the north end, souq in the middle, corniche shawarma at the end.
