Wadi Tanuf
A ruined village, a gorge, and almost nobody there.
Palm groves, turquoise pools under small waterfalls, and the bombed-out ruins of old Tanuf village at the mouth of the gorge. Half an hour from Nizwa and a fraction of the traffic.

How to get to Wadi Tanuf
- 30 min from Nizwa on Route 21, signposted to Tanuf.
- 2WD reaches the ruins and the wadi mouth.
- The dirt track deeper in is rough, that part wants a 4×4.
What you'll do
- Start at the ruins of old Tanuf, bombed out in the 1950s and left standing.
- Walk up into the gorge: palm groves, falaj channels, turquoise pools under small waterfalls.
- Water's up? Swim. Water's down? Still one of the better short gorge walks in the country.
- Either way it's usually empty.
