Whale shark season
Summer's consolation prize: the biggest fish on Earth, off Muscat.
When the summer heat empties the wadis, the sea delivers: whale sharks gather off the Daymaniyat Islands roughly June to October. Snorkelling beside one is the single most humbling thing you can do in Omani water, and it's a day trip from the capital.

How to get to Whale shark season
- Book a licensed Daymaniyat snorkel/dive operator out of Muscat, summer departures chase the sharks.
- Boats leave early, be at the marina by the time they say minus fifteen minutes.
What you'll do
- Scan the blue with the crew until a shadow the size of a bus appears.
- Slip in quietly and swim alongside, they're filter feeders, utterly indifferent to you.
- Between sightings you're at the Daymaniyats anyway, the snorkelling fills the gaps.
